J.-B. Venturi (1746-1822), "physicist, born near Reggio, Reggio nell'Emilia, in Italy. Ordained a priest (1769), he was appointed professor of geometry and philosophy at the University of Modena (1773), and later became professor of physics. His research concentrated on the flow of fluids, and he kept in close touch with the work of Bernoulli and Euler in fluid mechanics. He is remembered for his discovery of the Venturi effect, the decrease in the pressure of a fluid in a pipe where the diameter has been reduced by a gradual taper. The effect has many applications, such as in the carburettor and fluid-flow measuring instruments" ( Kent, W.G., "An Appreciation of Two Great Workers in Hydraulics" (London: 1912), stated that only two or three copies of this "most interesting volume" still exist (Roberts and Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, pp. 339-40). "Venturi's classic and surprisingly rare work in experimental hydrodynamics, describing a series of experiments which he undertook in Italy, using Poleni's efflux apparatus (Rouse and Ince, History of Hydraulics, pp. 136-137).
