Lot n°0227

- CRANE (Walter). The Baby's Opera. A Book of old rhymes with new dresses. The Music by the earliest Masters. London, Frederick Warne and New York, sans date (vers 1900), 8° carré, cart. ill. édit. (coins usés, sinon bel exemplaire). There are 11 full page Walter Crane illustrations and each of the remaining 56 pages is highly decorated in the Arts and Crafts style with Pre-Raphaelite influences. The standard of decoration is much more sophisticated than other children's books of the time and is very representative of Crane's philosophy that every page should be worthy of adornment. The wood engraving was undertaken by Edmund Evans, who had a fruitful collaboration with Crane, and also with Kate Greenaway.
